Industrial Metrology
Industrial Metrology is a whole subject within Industrial or Production Engineering. Industrial Metrology uses a variety of measuring and gauging instruments to check, verify and approve the quality of production as well as the upkeep of machinery and tools used in machine shops, assembly processes and related. Examples of Industrial Metrology instruments are vernier calipers, micrometers, dial gauges, bevel protectors, auto collimators, sine bar spirit levels, tool room microscopes, length measuring machines, comparators and many more.
Metrology can be used to test the straightness, flatness, roundness, squareness and concentricity of objects. Additionally, screws and gears can be tested for important parameters like screw thread angle, pitch, major and minor diameters of threads, gear tooth thickness, gear profiles, gear concentricity, pitch and run-out of involute gears and more.
