Tunnel Engineering – What it is.

Tunnel Engineering is a field of civil engineering which focuses on construction of tunnels. Tunnels can be made through mountains, underground or under sea. The construction of tunnels from one end of the tunnel to the other end requires knowledge of tunnel engineering concepts, insights into practical aspects and challenges that come in the planning and developing of tunnels.

Tunnels can be used for railways, vehicular traffic, pedestrian traffic, animals and even as aqueducts for sewers and water transport. However tunnels can’t be construed as pipelines.

Tunnels are typically made using tunnel boring techniques, however processes similar to laying pipelines are sometimes used for making tunnels.
